Listening to this album in a relaxed state with your undivided attention can elicit a mystical experience. It is one of the deepest and most magical pieces of polyvinyl chloride I own. Not much more to say than that.

AMG Review
by John Storm Roberts
This 1979 recording is probably Afro-experimentalist Vasconcelos' finest. It presents his various facets -- berimbao playing, intricate overlain vocals, fine percussion, even gorgeous guitar -- simply and almost overwhelmingly. This is one of those performances that remind one to never let natural dogmatism get too out of hand.

I always considered Nana Vasconcelos as too experimental for me, but your text makes me very curious. I'll give it a try. Thanks in advance.

The discography is pretty impressive. You can find some extra albums at two of my favourite brazil music blogs:

For much the same reason I don't think I enjoy another NV album half as much as this one, Jur.

I'd say this is mostly an experiment in minimalism and counterpoint tethered by ethereal melodies and very subtle string accompaniment and it works for me.

Thanks for the recommendations! I see the first two Codonas are at Abracadaba so I'll check them out.

Cheeba, You're missing one of this artists real shining moments. Please listen to his work on that "Teca & Ricardo" disc on my page & see why people call this artist a legend. Sometimes it's how someone fits into a session that reveals their magic. He shines very brightly on the above mentioned set. No lie.
His experimental sound really finds a context with these players.

Thanks J! I'll have to check that one out too.

I tried to keep the discog list to solo albums under his name, so it may seem a bit short for learned afficianados such as yourself.

I am not averse to his experimentation, it's just that anyone who tries different things and breaks new ground will not please everyone all the time from a subjective listening pleasure point of view.

It helps to have a guide in these cases. That's why it's great to have you visit and direct us to the golden nuggets you've found after all your sifting!

Cheeba, You'll spot Naná on that Teca & Ricardo. You may also notice the Bass & Keyboard work as exceptional.

If you mean the one I found here:

then I would agree. It is quite magnificent and he's also superb in this context.
